Preserving a Beloved Gem: Kärcher Cleans the Bronx Victory Memorial
Kärcher's international Cultural Sponsorship program, in collaboration with New York City Parks, gave the 92-year-old Bronx Victory Memorial a much-needed deep cleaning.

The Bronx Victory Memorial is more than just a structure; it is a beloved gem and a powerful symbol of sacrifice for the Bronx borough. Dedicated on September 24, 1933, the monument serves as a tribute to the 947 Bronx soldiers who lost their lives in World War I.
The memorial features a 75-foot limestone column topped by an 18-foot gilded bronze "Lady of Victory" figure. Its components include Cordova Texas limestone, granite, and bronze surfaces.
Kärcher's preservation experts carried out various tests and created sample areas in advance to ensure the gentle cleaning techniques would leave this prominent and striking landmark pristine for future generations.
Kärcher's expert cleaning team worked closely with NYC Parks Art & Antiquities team to ensure the preservation standards were met.
- The Challenge: Gently removing biological dirt such as algae, mold, and lichen without damaging the monument's delicate surfaces.
- The Solution: Kärcher utilized specialized low-pressure steam cleaning technology. By operating at only 7 to 14 psi, this process is designed to be gentle on the surface while effectively removing contamination. This high-temperature, low-pressure technique avoids the need for chemicals and ensures the original stone substance is not affected.
Jonathan Kuhn, Director of Art & Antiquities, NYC Parks, highlighted the value of the collaboration, stating, “We are deeply grateful for Karcher’s donation of services and expertise using its state-of-the-art precision steam cleaning system to preserve this prominent and striking monument that honors the Bronx's fallen war heroes.
